While you might apply sunscreen to your face and body, it’s likely you’re missing a few spots. Here’s a list of product picks to keep your skin safe – from your face to your feet.

Face

  • La Roche Posay Anethelios 60 Ultra Light Sunscreen. Packed with effective sun filters and potent antioxidants, this ultra-light sunscreen provides advanced protection against UVA and UVB rays at the cellular level. In addition to being lightweight, this formula is also fast absorbing and has a matte finish.
  • NIA24 Sun Damage Prevention Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30. This 100 percent physical sunscreen – with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide – delivers serious sun defense, while soothing the skin and improving its appearance. It helps with hyperpigmentation, and ingredients like alpha bisabolol even hydrate the skin.
  • Hydropeptide Anti-Wrinkle Skin Enhancing UV Protection SPF 30. A true multitasking formula, this sunscreen not only shields the skin, but also treats signs of aging and acne and gives skin a smooth finish. Specifically, it self-adjusts to the color of your skin for flawless coverage, while helping to create a clearer complexion.

Lips

  • Coola Liplux Original. Lips are also vulnerable to sun damage and UV-caused signs of aging. A natural and paraben-free formula, Cool Liplux Original boasts broad-spectrum protection and helps to nourish and moisturize the lips. It contains aloe vera to hydrate and soothe and avocado butter to minimize sun damage.
  • Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Plump Perfect Lip Moisture Cream SPF 30. In addition to protecting your pout from UV rays, this moisture cream hydrates the lips and gives them a fuller, healthier appearance.

Hair

  • Quintessence Q-Sunshades Leave In Hair Conditioner and Scalp Protectant SPF 30. Along with the skin, your strands and scalp can also soak up some sun damage. UV rays create dry, dull, brittle and lifeless locks, and cause hair color to fade, too. This leave-in conditioner and scalp protectant provides broad-spectrum protection while keeping strands safe, extending the life of your hair color and treating any damage.

Hands

  • Borba Advanced Flawless Tons Hand Crème SPF 25. Not only does this cream shield your hands from the sun, but it also treats signs of aging, including wrinkles, crepe-like skin, dryness and discoloration. Overall, this multitasking formula protects, rejuvenates and hydrates hands.
  • Boscia Daily Hand Revival Therapy SPF 15. Along with protecting the hands from sun damage, Boscia Daily Hand Revival Therapy features a variety of plant extracts, including jojoba leaf, willow herb and calendula flower, to nourish and revitalize the skin. It also boasts mulberry to lighten age spots caused by UV rays.
  • ZO Skin Health Oraser Daily Hand Repair SPF 20. Rich in retinol and potent antioxidants like vitamin C and coenzyme Q10, this daily hand repair formula defends the hands from sun damage and diminishes discoloration, fine lines and wrinkles. It also boosts skin tone and texture.

Sun protection boosters

Sunscreen isn’t the only part of protecting your skin. Here’s a checklist of sun care must-haves to go over every time you step in the sun:

  • 3-inch wide-brimmed hat to shield your scalp, face, ears and hair from the sun.
  • Dark clothes with tightly woven fabric or clothes specifically formulated with sun protection, which have an Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF). Wear these clothes especially when you’re outdoors for longer periods of time, like when you’re at the beach, park or working out (some athletic brands have come out with UPF clothing).
  • Gloves when you’re gardening or doing other related activities outside to give hands extra protection.
  • A beach umbrella. But remember that umbrellas shouldn’t substitute your sunscreen. While umbrellas provide some defense from the sun, UV rays can still bounce off the sand and water and onto your skin.
  • Sunglasses to shield your eyes.

Before you head outdoors, be sure you’re protected from head to toe. Any spot without sunscreen is susceptible to damage. In addition to the above areas, people typically forget to protect the temples, ears, fingers, feet, behind the knees and the backs of their necks. Plus, remember that sunscreen is just one part of a comprehensive sun care routine. Sun-protective clothing, hats, sunglasses and umbrellas are all essentials, too!

  • FAQs

A: Dermatologist Leslie Baumann, M.D., lists off the best ingredients on her Yahoo! Health blog, The Skin Guru. For the best in UVA blockers, she suggests looking for “Mexoryl, Helioplex 360, active photobarrier complex, avobenzone”; for UVB blockers, “Homosalate, Octosalate, octylmethoxycinnamate”; and for ingredients that block both UVA and UVB rays, look for “Octocrylene, zinc oxide, titanium dioxide.”
A: New York City dermatologist, Howard Sobel, M.D., gives some good advice to Real Beauty. He suggests washing your face two times a day – at a minimum – with a cleanser that contains 1 to 2 percent salicylic acid, which should control the overabundance of oil that pops up in the summer. You might be struggling with back acne, too, which is common during the summer, Dr. Sobel says. To treat it, just look for an anti-acne scrub specifically made for the body. When picking out your sunscreen, choose an oil-free, quick-absorbing formula that controls oil production and has a matte finish.
A: The Ultraviolet Protection Factor or UPF is similar to SPF with sunscreen, except that it’s used to indicate the level of sun protection you get with clothing. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, for example, a UPF of 50 lets 1/50th of UV rays come through the fabric, thereby allowing just 2 percent to penetrate. That amounts to a lot of sun protection! However, like regular clothes, clothes with sun-protective properties can become less effective after being stretched out, washed repeatedly or when wet.
A: According to Fox News, sunglasses provide the eyes with UV protection, which is critical because the sun can cause cataracts, growths on the eyes and photokeratitis, a passing but painful sunburn of the eyes. Also, a few hours in the sun can make it harder for your eyes to adjust to the dark or indoor lighting, and long-term sun exposure may be a risk factor for the eye disorder macular degeneration. Plus, sunglasses protect from skin cancer of the lids and around the eyes.
